How to enhance a territory? Ask the students

A project of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga Park to support the local economy, cultural integration and nutritional education for the younger generations
The young students of the Gran Sasso Monti and Laga Parks take to the stove to enhance the products of the territory. This is the “Menu for Park Schools” initiative, promoted by the Gran Sasso Park Authority and financed by the Ministry of the Environment as part of the project “Biodiversity for the Park Re-Shock -Promotion and Valorisation of Agricultural and Zootechnical Biodiversity”, presented today at the “Di Poppa – Rozzi” Hotel Institute in Teramo. The students of the professional institutes of the provinces of the Park will try their hand at the culinary creations and will present their personal proposal for a “Park Plate” that makes the best use of the raw materials of the territory, starting from a common element: sheep meat.
A qualified jury – composed of starred chefs, journalists and nutritionists, representatives of the Ministry of the Environment and catering, president and director of the Park, local administrators and, above all, a child of a school in the area, representing the real users of the initiative – will have the task of assessing the product made by students. For the purposes of the award will be taken into account not only the presentation and the goodness of the dish, but also the possibility of including it in the menu of school canteens as a “Single Dish”.
“It is important that young people, from school age, can access the food of quality and absolute excellence of their territory,” stresses the President of the Park Tommaso Navarra, “shortening the supply chains and supporting the producers of the Park that, with great tenacity, play an important role in protecting the territory and for the benefit of the community. The aim of the project is to transform the work done by the students into a concrete tool to promote awareness of food choices in the new generations. The most ambitious hope is that the project will stimulate the operators of the school canteens sector, so that healthy and environmentally friendly food can be guaranteed”.
All the participants in the project, as specifically requested by the Park, focused their attention on the sheep breeding chain, which historically represents an important source of livelihood for the internal areas, which are also the identification of the territory.
Thanks to its nutritional values and high digestibility, sheep meat is a real element of socio-cultural integration, becoming part of a healthy food tradition typical of all the regions and all the identity belonging present today, even on a religious level, in the territory of the Park.
