The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNCN) has expressed interest in the project of the Belene nuclear power plant in Bulgaria, abandoned in 2012 by the Sofia authorities. The Bulgarian news agency Bta reports this, citing Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova, who in fact confirmed today the Chinese interest during a ‘question time’ in Parliament. In the past, Sofia had already talked about the interest of CNNNC, the largest state-controlled energy company in China, in the Belene project. According to a 2016 Arbitration Judgment, Bulgaria still has to pay about 600 million euros in compensation to the Russian AtomStroyExport, for two reactors already manufactured for Belene. Since then the Bulgarian government is trying to revitalize the project. In February, Bulgarian premier Boyko Borissov also put the idea of relaunching Belene as a “common energy project for all the Balkans” on the table.
