The accession negotiations with the EU of Albania and Macedonia will start in June next year. This is the compromise agreement announced by the Bulgarian rotating presidency of the EU to give “a clear European perspective” to Tirana and Skopje. France and the Netherlands were against initiating negotiations that others would have liked to start immediately. The compromise solution was also reached thanks to Italy, which has always supported the prospect of integration of the two Balkan countries in the EU.   In the final text, the European Commission is also mandated to continue with the preparatory work for the start of negotiations for Skopje and Tirana. The result came after two days of close discussions at the General Affairs Council, with EU ministers having managed to agree on a compromise text only to the last, by postponing the opening date of the negotiations for a year.
