Gilberto Benetton died in his house in Treviso after a brief period of illness. The entrepreneur had 77 ann.

With his three brothers he founded the textile company which later became an international group with holdings in various industrial sectors, from highways to airports. Gilberto Benetton was the architect of this expansion, which culminated with the Atlantia-Abertis agreement.

In August, the collapse of the Morandi bridge in Genoa involved Autostrade per l’Italia and the Veneto family.

After the global growth in the 70s, in the following decade Gilberto launched the family towards the conquest of Autogrill, Autostrade, Aeroporti di Roma and other companies in the real estate and infrastructure sectors. With financial holdings in Generali and Mediobanca, a strategy that has led the Benettons to reign over an international empire and has made Gilberto the 12th richest man in Italy, with assets estimated at two billion.

Gilberto Benetton, through Atlantia, had been engaged for a year for the conquest of the Russian airport of Moscow, Shremetyevo, about thirty kilometers from the capital, one of the 6 airports in Moscow that serves about 60% of the international air transport service of the Federation.
