Over 158 million bottles of Italian sparkling wine will accompany festive meals at winter holidays worldwide

Italians love Italian sparkling wines and at upcoming winter holidays are going to drink over 62 million bottles of so called bollicine or bubbly wines, up 10% over the last year. Some 158 million bottles (up 20% over 2015) of Italian sparkling wine will be opened worldwide to celebrate Christmas and New Year.

According to the Italian Wine Observatory (Osservatorio del Vino) estimates, drawn up on the statistics of the ISMEA (Italian Institute of Statistics), in 2016, Italy has produced over 625 million bottles or 4.69 million hectoliters of sparkling wine, up 18% over 2015. What’s more, exports of Italian bubbles in third countries grew to 450 million bottles or 3.4 million hectoliters.

“The following New Year’s Eve will close an extremely positive year for our sparkling wines. We can already say that we have reached record sales both in the domestic market and abroad,” said Antonio Rallo, the president of the Osservatorio del Vino.

Italians sparkling wines include a total of 153 wines labeled DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), 18 DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) wines, and 17 IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) wines, as well as several dozen of other bollecine which are not covered by certification of origin or geographic origin.
