European Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said  that the Italian budget was among the “uncertainties” that weighed on Europe and the European Commission’s strictures on the 2019 budgetary plans had not yet “found a response”.

Moscovici cited global trade tensions, Brexit and the Italian budget as the three main uncertainties weighing on Europe.

He stressed that the three main strictures of the EC – growth, deficit and debt – “at the present time have not found a response”.

He said that an infringement procedure for excessive deficit “as it stands today would be needed”.

Moscovici answered a question whether a 2.2% budget deficit, down from 2.4% would be enough for the EC by saying “it’s not a question of figures, it’s not a matter of making an average, there are rules that must be respected.”
