Russia is lifting food-stuff ban on foods for children

Jun 1, 2016 4:07 pm

Russian Prime Minister first proposed to extend embargo until end 2017, then signs a decree lifting food embargo on meats and vegetables used in baby foods

Russian government decided to lift import embargo on agri-food products such as cattle meat, poultry meat and vegetables intended for the production of foods for children. The relevant governmental decree (the Government Decree No. 472 of 27 May 2016) was signed by the Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, reports Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

According to the document the import ban will be lifted on “cattle meat, poultry meat and its by-products, as well as fresh, dried, and frozen vegetables, designated for production of foods for children,” reads the document. Import of these products will be allowed on the approval of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture (Minselhoz) on the intended use.

In August 2014, Russia restricted imports of food products from the EU countries, the United States, Canada, Australia and Norway. On June 24, 2015 President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on extending the food embargo through August 5, 2016.

Earlier last week, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev proposed to extend food import ban until the end of 2017 and assigned the government to prepare all necessary documents.
