Lomonosov Moscow State University to open new department of space sciences

Jan 18, 2017 1:10 pm

The new faculty is expected to be opened in Sep. as part of the agreement with Roscosmos space agency

Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), named Russia’s best university in 2016, is planing to add this year a department of space sciences to its 42 faculties, the university’s rector Viktor Sadovnichy said, reports Sputnik.

The new department is expected to be opened in Sep. as part of an agreement on joint research, educational and design work the university signed with the Roscosmos State Corporation for Space Activities back in 2015.

The space faculty will mainly conduct fundamental and applied research, study the physical and psychological effects of longtime space travel on humans, and develop computer software for intellectual aerospace trainers, etc.

“The construction of the Vostochny spaceport in the Far East Russia urgently needs specialists in various fields of space research and this is where Moscow State University can help,” the university’s rector said, noting that Moscow State University is already actively involved in space exploration. Indeed, the University has launched six satellites of its own making. One of them, named Lomonosov, became the first to be launched into space from the Vostochny space center.

“Perhaps, we are the only university capable of building and launching its own satellites. The Lomonosov, which we launched from Vostochny in April 2016, is a space station of 500 kg bristling with dozens of instruments aimed to study outer space and the Earth’s atmosphere,” Mr Sadovnichi said.

Founded in 1755, Lomonosov Moscow State University is the largest of all Russian universities and one of the oldest. It is currently educating over 50 thousand students. It was repeatedly highly ranked in both the BRICS ranking and the QS World University Rankings.

Last week, Viktor Sadovnichy said Russian President Vladimir Putin that the University was recently ranked third by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) graduate employability ranking.
