Germany and Austria have just announced their intention to strengthen their controls, not only at the Brenner but also at the border between Austria and Germany. In Bavaria, the local police will also take part in the border controls in addition to the Austrian and German federal agents.

Thomas Borowik, spokesman for the German Federal Police in Munich, said that the controls will focus on freight trains to prevent migrants from attempting ”this dangerous path of illegal immigration” to Germany.

In 2017, 14,600 migrants were intercepted along the border between Austria and Germany, 3.800 in the first four months of 2018.
