Moscow government wants special mobile phone tariffs for visitors of the 2018 FIFA World Cup

The Moscow city government are planning to offer special mobile phone tariffs for visitors of the 2018 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament, reported Vedomosti daily.

“It could be a special SIM card for guests of the event distributed at the airport,” said a spokeswoman for the capital city’s IT department Yelena Novikova, adding that tourists also could join a single tourist tariff.

According to her, mobile operators would not find it difficult to distribute such new SIM cards, as they will be competing first of all with the city’s free Wi-Fi network, which is being laid by company Enforta upon Moscow’s order. The network will be accessible within the Garden Ring, although the two Moscow’s stadiums, hosting the events, will be outside the Wi-Fi circle.

What’s more, in 2017, a free citywide seamless Wi-Fi network will be launched in Moscow connecting all means of public transport in the capital, including metro, surface transit, the Moscow Central Ring, Aeroexpress, and the suburban commuter train networks.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is taking place in the country during June 14–July 15, 2018, in 11 cities of Russia, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Sochi, and Rostov-on-Don.

Earlier in 2016, the then-Sport Minister Vitaly Mutko said that the event could see 1 million foreign visitors.
