The 319 medium-sized Italian companies in the sector, with a turnover of more than 16 million euro, are divided into 272 production companies and 47 commercial enterprises. In the first category furniture is the one with the largest number of operating companies, among which 24 design and produce kitchens, 31 operate between the upholstered furniture (armchairs and sofas, mattresses) and most of them build other large and small-sized domestic furniture.

The geographical distribution of companies tells us that 44% of companies are in the North East. Most of them have had an economic increase and an affirmation in the domestic design sector from the 70s to today. In the North-West, on the other hand, there are 31% and most are in Lombardy, the region that hosts the International Furniture Fair, the most important trade fair in the world.

By putting aside the € 4.9 billion of domestic furniture, wood and derivatives companies had a turnover of € 3.3 billion in 2016. Armchairs and sofas follow with 1.6 billion and lighting with 1.5 billion. The lighting production sector mainly lives on export. The 31 companies in the sector export 72.6% of their product. Those producing armchairs and sofas are the most appreciated abroad, where 63.4% of their production comes. The wood macro area, on the other hand, is third in terms of exports with 61.8%. The domestic design sector has not suffered any impact from the economic crisis: in 2012, the total turnover of medium and large companies stood at 16.8 billion euro and reached 20.4 in 2016; at the same time, revenues from exports increased from € 6.8 billion in 2012 to 8.4% in 2016 (Mediobanca data)
