Almost one million people obtained citizenship in one of the EU member countries in 2016, with data growing compared to previous years.

In absolute terms, with the ok to 201,591 citizenships Italy is in first place in Europe; followed by Spain, 150,944; and United Kingdom, 149.372. Italy has granted citizenship to people coming mainly from Albania (18.3%); Morocco (17,5%); and Romania (6.4%). Eurostat communicates this.

Italy has granted 13% more citizenship than in 2015. In particular, Italy has 34.8% of the Moroccan 101.300 citizens who obtained citizenship in the EU; 54.7% of the 67,500 Albanians; 43.6% of the 29,700 Romanians; 54.9% of the 15,400 coming from Bangladesh; 44.9% of the 11.300 Senegalese; and 40.7% of Ghanaians.
