Parts of the northern region of Emilia-Romagna have been put on red alert for floods due to the risk of rivers bursting their banks because of torrential rain.

The region is also being battered by strong winds. The Bologna-Rimini train line was closed between Cesena and Forlì as a precaution on Monday morning, after the Savio river broke its banks and water was nearly submerging train tracks on a bridge in the area. Many schools and several bridges were closed due to the extreme weather.
