The world’s largest aluminum producer UC Rusal has announced the sale of a bauxite mining and alumina processing plant Alpart located in Jamaica to Chinese group Jiuquan Iron & Steel (Jisco) for $299 million, reads the company’s press service.

The deal is part of the company’s programme for optimization of the UC Rusal’s asset portfolio and for reduction of the debt burden, reads the company’s statement.

“We are pleased with this deal which is interesting to us from a financial point of view and, what’s more, it doesn’t have any effect to the Rusal productive chain,” quotes the statement the general director of UC Rusal Vladislav Soloviev. “This deal strengthens our ties with Chinese partners and opens up an opportunity to develop our cooperation in other fields.”

The deal was approved by Rusal’s board of directors and is still to be accepted by the Government of Jamaica and the Chinese relevant authorities.

UC Rusal is the world’s largest aluminum producer. In 2015, the company accounted to about 7% of global production of aluminum. Rusal manages plants in 19 countries worldwide.
