Russia’s Transport Ministry may introduce special fee for vehicles crossing the border, the Kommersant newspaper reports on Thursday with reference to its unknown sources.
According to the newspaper, new tariffs, which could be put in place already in the second half of 2017, would likely be used to fund border checkpoints. The ministry proposes to start with vehicles paying set tariffs according to their categories; while trains paying per ton of cargo. For this purpose, it was also proposed to create an appropriate payment system similar to Platon Electric Toll Collection system.
According to Deputy Transport Minister Alexei Tsydenov, some 80% of Russia’s 314 border crossing points require modernization. Between 200 to 250 of them require private investment to ensure that they are reconstructed and modernized, with average costs potentially reaching 1 bln roubles (USD15.7 mln), Kommersant reports.
