Russian Railways announced that it will invest 3 billion roubles in new motorised multiple engine and carriage units in 2016. The company intends to purchase 82 ED4M and ED9E series electric train carriages manufactured by the Demikhovo Machine-Building Plant, the company’s press center reports.

In addition to the company’s plans to purchase suburban rolling stock, Russian Railways conducts an annual overhaul of its commuter fleet. In 2015, 923 motorised multiple unit railway carriages were overhauled at a cost of nearly 2.8 billion roubles. While in 2016 it plans to overhaul 956 cars of suburban railway carriages.

In 2015, under the Company’s investment program, Russian Railways purchased 70 motorised multiple units at a cost of over 2.67 billion roubles, procuring 64 ED9E series carriages made by the Demikhovo Machine-Building Plant (which make up 15 trains) and 6 carriages (two rail-mounted buses) produced by OJSC Metrovagonmash.

JSC “Russian Railways” was established by the RF Government Decree in September 2003. The creation of the state company was the first stage in reforming the railway sector. Now it is the sole owner of the rail track and key rail infrastructure in Russia and one of the three largest transport groups in the world.

In December 2012, JSC Russian Railways complied the acquisition of 75% of the shares of French logistics company Gefco SA from PSA Peugeot Citroen for a total of 800 million euro.

Gefco is one of Europe’s top ten major logistics operators and a major provider of integrated 4PL/3PL logistics services. That gave access to Russian Railways to state-of-the-art logistics technologies, increase the efficiency of the transportation infrastructure’s utilisation and promote the attractiveness of transit cargo flows through Russia’s territory.
