Russian Railways (RZD) is ready to launch its own retail chain stores. As Izvestia reports referring to its sources close to the project, it was largely inspired by well-known international chain 7 Eleven. The main features of the new chain will be limited range of products and fast service.

First investment amounts to about 140 million rubles to open 30 stores at railway stations. Initially, in September, it was about creating a joint project with X5 Retail Group (one of the largest Russian grocery retailers) and ZHTK-Pyaterochka participation, but now the initiative was taken directly by the controlled RZD Trading Company – Zheleznodorozhnaya torgovaya kompaniya (ZhTK).

It will use its own spaces in about 750 train stations. The first three will be opened soon in Moscow, Ramenskoye, and Orel of about 300 square meters each. In total, the stores will have up to two thousand denominations depending on the shop’s area and food/non-food product mix.

The new retail chain stores will offer mini coffee shops serving first and second courses, as well as alcohol. It will occupy about 20% of the store. The new chain will cooperate with both Russian and foreign suppliers through public procurement, thus launching public tenders for a one year contract. (A.H.)
