The event will end today

The X Eurasian Economic Forum kicked off at the Palazzo della Gran Guardia in Verona (Italy) on 19th October 2017. The organizers of the annual business event are the Conoscere Eurasia Association, the Roscongress Foundation, and the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The main theme for discussion this year is ‘Greater Eurasia as a driving force in the current international geopolitical and economic context‘. The event’s agenda focuses on key problems concerning economic development in Greater Eurasia, including such themes as EU–EAEU cooperation, the development of the energy, financial, transport, and infrastructure sectors, inter-regional cooperation, and information and digital technologies.

The event will end today, after two days of debates. Yesterday, some institutional (and no-institutional) representatives took part at the event. Among them were Romano Prodi, Foundation for Worldwide Cooperation’s president, Gerhard Schroder, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Rosneft; and Federico Sboarina, Mayor of Verona.

Prodi declared to be “entirely dissatisfied with how relations between us are developing – we have mutual interests and a shared history, but we are divided by modern politics. There really are a lot of things that should be helping to bring us together. We have had and continue to have joint interests, things we have in common. But then the war in Iraq began, a dreadful episode, then the process affected Georgia and finally Ukraine. We have gathered here today to relaunch dialogue and cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union. We need Russia, together with Russian resources and a number of Russian technologies. In spite of our common interests, we have taken backward steps”.

Instead, Schroder said: “The USA are more interested in a weak Russia than a strong one. In Europe, it’s the other way round. Germany in particular wants to see Russia flourish. Firstly, we need a market, which is linked to exports. We need resources for industry – oil and gas. We need a range of services that are available in Russia. With this contradiction between the interests of the USA and Europe, we need to work to put a stop to sanctions. USA are trying to weaken energy cooperation between Europe and Russia. We need to improve relations between the European Union and Russia. We need to do away with the system of sanctions”.

Finally, Sboardina tolked about Verona and it’s cooperation with Eurasia and Europe: “Business and innovation are progressing much more quickly than cooperation between Eurasia and the European Union. It is significant that entrepreneurs see politics as more of a hindrance than as a tool for growth. Now is a delicate time from a geopolitical point of view. But we hope that, starting with Verona (taking into account its location and its features as a city of culture, tourism and business), politics at an international level will once again provide grounds for growth“.
